Polyvinylidene Fluoride

Polyvinylidene Fluoride

What is Polyvinylidene Fluoride?

PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride or Polyvinylidene Difluoride) is a high-purity thermoplastic fluoropolymer with a semi-crystalline structure. PVDF exhibits a strong combination of properties at service temperatures up to 150°C, including:

  • Exceptional chemical resistance
  • High mechanical strength
  • Piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties
  • As well as good processability

PVDF Properties

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a high-performance thermoplastic known for its excellent electrical insulation properties, as well as its strong chemical and thermal resistance. It maintains its integrity when exposed to harsh chemicals, solvents, and high temperatures, making it a durable choice for demanding environments. In addition to its outstanding resistance, PVDF also exhibits high impact strength and abrasion resistance similar to that of Nylons, ensuring long-lasting performance in mechanical applications. Another notable advantage of PVDF is that it does not require the addition of heat or UV stabilisers, making it easier to process and maintain in outdoor and high-temperature environments.

Common PVDF Applications

PVDF is widely used in a variety of industries due to its unique properties. It plays a crucial role in energy-consuming industries, automotive, military aircraft, and the petrochemical sector, where its resistance to corrosive materials makes it ideal for producing seals, gaskets, linings, and other components that must withstand harsh chemicals and extreme conditions. Its combination of durability, chemical resistance, and thermal stability makes it an essential material for applications that demand long-term reliability.

Key features:

  • Heat resistance
  • High abrasion resistance
  • Low permeability to most gases and liquids
  • Weather resistant
  • Low weight
  • Mechanical strength
  • Radiation resistance
  • Good electrical insulator
  • Resistance to chemical corrosion
  • Recyclable
