Polyethylene is one of the most common types of thermoplastics used in the plastic injection moulding process. It is used to manufacture a wide range of products from shopping bags through to children’s toys. Based in the West Midlands, our company works with many different materials when it comes to plastic injection moulding, including polyethylene. We work with two different types for injection moulding: Low density polyethylene (LDPE) and High density polyethylene (HDPE).
Low Density Polyethylene
Low density polyethylene, often known as LDPE, is a clear type of plastic that is flexible, chemical resistant, and waterproof. It is used to manufacture many different products such as bags, plastic bags, and plastic bottles.
High Density Polyethylene
High density polyethylene, sometimes referred to as HDPE, is another type of polyethylene used in the production of plastic parts. It is available in both translucent and opaque variations, and has fantastic chemical resistance. HDPE is commonly used to make plastic containers, toys, outdoor furniture, and kitchen equipment.
Similarities Between LDPE And HDPE
As both LDPE and HDPE are made of the same polymerised ethylene molecules, characteristically, they are very similar. Both materials have the following properties:
- High impact strength
- Low weight
- Chemical, weather, and water vapour resistance
- Low cost of manufacture
During the plastic injection moulding process, both types of polyethylene also demonstrate the below properties:
- Fast injection speeds
- Melt temperature between 180 ̊ and 280 ̊ C
- No requirement to dry the finished product
Both variations are recyclable. However LDPE can be more difficult to recycle due to the fact that it is softer and can end up getting caught in the machinery. Generally, HDPE is easier to transport and recycle.
Some industries that used these materials include the automotive, electrical, hydraulics and pneumatics and packaging sectors.
Differences Between LDPE And HDPE
Although the above polyethylene variations share many characteristics, they also have different internal makeups, resulting in them having some differences too. LDPE is more flexible than HDPE and has a lower melting point. Additionally it is more transparent than the higher density version. But, is also much more likely to crack when under stress. HDPE is particularly rigid and offers greater chemical resistance than LDPE. The melting point is also higher, and therefore it is able to withstand higher temperatures.
