Styrene Acrylonitrile Plastic Injection Moulding
Stephens Plastics Mouldings is the leading UK manufacturer of pieces formed by injection moulding techniques. With our years of experience, our extensive knowledge and creative ideas, we can help you choose the right plastic for your application. We work with a range of plastic materials, one being Styrene Acrylonitrile.
Styrene Acrylonitrile
Also known as SAN, Styrene Acrylonitrile resin, is a rigid, hard, transparent copolymer plastic. It is made by combining Styrene (70-80-percent by weight) and Acrylonitrile with a rubber modifier. Although styrene is toxic, this combination is stable and is widely used in the food industry.
SAN is easy to process, does not crack or craze under stress. The material can be easily coloured in a wide range of shades with a good depth of colour. In addition, it has a brilliant surface and accepts print easily. It has good resistance to chemicals and greater thermal resistance than polystyrene. Also, it resists thermal shock so SAN can be used with boiling water. Therefore, making it a good choice for beakers, cups, coffee filters, and the external casing of thermally insulated flasks or jugs.
Perfect For Kitchen Equipment
It is resistant to grease, fats and oils, as well as to other food stains, so it is an excellent choice for kitchen equipment such as mixing bowls, storage containers, and refrigerator fittings. Also, products made from SAN can be safely washed in a dishwasher.
One of the most common uses of SAN is in multi-trip tableware and cutlery for the catering industry. This is due to its brilliant resistant surface, it is also ideal for bathroom fittings and cosmetic packaging. Also because of its durability, other uses for SAN include the outer covers of calculators, printers, lamps, scales, and many other instruments and appliances for the home, office, and industry.
